Every now and then, a song comes along that just ticks all my boxes. There needs to be an element of nonchalant cool, the track should be catchy and still have a deeper musical connection, and the production needs to match the song quality. And, I also like a song that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Well, in Athena Lim’s latest release, I’ve found a winner!

White Dust,’ the second single from London-based artist Athena Lim, perfectly embodies these qualities and more. Picture ‘The Barrel’ by Aldous Harding creating a love child with the infectious vibe of ‘Shake it Off’ by Taylor Swift, and you’re only beginning to grasp the greatness of ‘White Dust’. Athena’s unique vocals, serene yet resonant, effortlessly meld with the track’s vibe. The instrumentation offers subtle nods to various funkster influences, weaving them into the fabric of the song without being blatant imitations. Instead, they add layers of complexity, drawing the listener in with each funky riff and melodic twist.

Produced in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and producer James Atin-Godden, ‘White Dust’ is a departure from the atmospheric previous single, ‘Being Someone.’ Yet, it retains Athena’s style while exploring more upbeat territories. Drawing inspiration from an eclectic mix of musical icons like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Dolly Parton, as well as bands like Parliament Funkadelic and Coldplay, Athena has created a sound that is her own.

But what I particularly love about ‘White Dust’ is its ability to strike a perfect balance between catchiness and depth. Athena’s vocals, paired with the intricate instrumentation, guide listeners through the song in an engaging manner. Funky bass, claps to add extra danceability, a clever little guitar break at the ideal point, and some lovely production effects that make this song contemporary and nuanced! And, then, to top it all off, before the end we have a mellow breakdown that takes us perfectly into the outro chorus repeats and injects a final touch of humour… “Am I supposed to be scatting?”

Also, a mention needs to be given to the awesome video! Crazy, surreal and great fun! Athena says, “I also love the visual component that accompanies the narrative of music. And creating the videos is experimental play I enjoy.” We can tell.

In conclusion, ‘White Dust’ is a triumph of artistry and creativity, showcasing Athena Lim’s talent as both a songwriter and performer. With its infectious energy, catchy hooks, and brilliant musicianship, the track is a must-listen for anyone craving something fresh and exciting. So don’t wait any longer – give ‘White Dust’ a listen now.
